History

E. Murphy & Sons Pty Ltd are a fifth generation national family owned company established in 1858.  Murphy Transport Solutions is the new image of E. Murphy & Sons Pty Ltd specialising in Transport, Distribution and Warehousing, with logistics facilities in Brisbane, Sydney, Adelaide and Melbourne (head office).  We are primarily involved in full load, food grade metropolitan and intrastate distribution.  Murphy Transport Solutions does undertake some linehaul as well as food grade tanker distribution.

In the beginning, there was Edward (Ned) Murphy with his carthorses and dray. Soon there were 300 working horses used for general contracting and road works. By the turn of the century, the first load of sugar was being carried; sugar cartage was shortly to become a specialty.

In 1929, with Bill Murphy (son of Ned) at the helm, the company was incorporated. Continuing the family tradition, Lindsay Snr., was next in line. The fourth generation, Lindsay Jnr., followed by his brother, Gavin being the current incumbent.

The move from horse-drawn to motorised vehicles began in 1920, and was eventually completed in 1952, when the last horse was retired to pasture. Today, our fleet consists of approximately 130 vehicles The fleet comprises 110 prime movers, 120 trailers, including freezer vans, tautliners, pneumatic tanks, liquid tanks, and 20 rigid vehicles, along with service and support vehicles. Purpose-built vehicles are painted with customer livery.

Significant increases in the size and flexibility of Murphy Transport Solutions have resulted from the introduction of warehousing, line-haul vehicles and container transport.

The company is continually looking to expand through new contracts and friendly mergers or acquisitions.
